Jason Kotek’s career at Rowlands Metalworks is a testament to dedication and growth. Recently celebrating an impressive 30 years with the company, Jason started as an apprentice and has progressed to key roles in CNC programming and machine maintenance. In today's market, working 30 years at one company is rare, but Jason's journey highlights that there are still opportunities for lifelong careers with companies like Rowlands Metalworks.
Jason began his career at Rowlands Metalworks as an apprentice after completing a prevocational course in plumbing and sheet metal at TAFE. Initially drawn to sheet metal, he quickly immersed himself in various aspects of the trade. From working with stainless steel and aluminium to operating new machinery, Jason’s eagerness to learn and grow saw him take on a variety of roles over the years.
“I started as an apprentice and did a bit of everything. I liked stainless steel and aluminium, and whenever new machinery came in, I always wanted to learn how to use it,” Jason recalls. This proactive attitude led him to fill in for the full-time programmer, gradually learning CNC programming and drafting.
Today, Jason is a full-time CNC programmer, responsible for programming, machine maintenance, and repairs. His role has evolved significantly over his three decades of employment, reflecting his diverse skill set and the opportunities available at Rowlands.
Cameron Johnston, Managing Director of the Rowlands Group, sees Jason as a prime example of the career development opportunities available within the company. “Jason is the embodiment of an aspiration that I have as a business owner. That is providing a career path where you can start as one thing and end up as another. He’s probably the best example of this opportunity that we have created,” Cameron said.
Cameron also praises Jason’s energy and enthusiasm, noting that he brings much more to Rowlands than just getting the job done. Jason’s cumulative experience spans both the shop floor and the machine programming area. His experience and can-do attitude have become valuable commodities within the organisation.
Rob Cebulski, CEO of the Rowlands Group, emphasises the importance of a supportive company culture in fostering long-term careers. “It’s good that Jason has enough trust in the company to stay around and not feel the need to look elsewhere. This trust is underpinned by personal development and a good culture,” Rob notes. "Jason’s energy and enthusiasm go beyond his specific roles, and we strive to provide opportunities to people who bring similar energy to their roles."
Jason’s dedication and versatility have made him an invaluable part of the Rowlands team. His experience sends a clear message to prospective employees about the potential for career development within the company. “I would encourage anyone to start their work life at Rowlands because it will go places where you don't necessarily expect but will be exciting and invigorating along the way,” Cameron advises.
From his early days as an apprentice to his current role in CNC programming, Jason’s career growth reflects the company’s dedication to fostering talent and providing diverse opportunities. His path is a prime example of how one can start in an entry-level position and grow into key roles within the company.
